Cerro Torre

Earlier today…

I’m sitting here at the Lago Torre in el Parque Nacional de los Glacieres, looking straight up at a big cloud. Behind the cloud stands this massive rock tower. It’s beautiful; I got a glimpse of it from afar when I started my trek. But now, after 3 hours of hiking this morning and 8 hours of strenuous hiking yesterday, all I see is a big mass of water molecules.

I sit here waiting with an old man. He was the only one here when I made it to the lake, sitting on a rock, staring at the cloud. His camera sits idle at the side. I can feel the disappointment in the air for both of us. Do I wait?

Well, I’ve been in this part of the park for about three days now. The first day rained. The second day looked promising, so a group of four of us started the trek to Laguna a Los Tres, or the Fitz Roy mountain. The sky was a light overcast, and I was hoping the sun could burn it away, but The sky only got more gray. Nonetheless, we were free from rain and the scenery was still quite breathtaking. Actually, it was incredibly breathtaking. I don’t think I’ve done a more beautiful hike.

After Fitz Roy, I still had one day left in the park, so I decided to do the next best hike, which is to Cerro Torre. I was alone in this, but this hike is shorter and significantly easier, so I felt I could do it fairly quickly.

But after pushing thru the soreness from yesterday’s 24 kilometers, my reward is a cloud. And to rub it in my face, everywhere else is bluebird skies. I can see the top of Fitz Roy, and it’s perfectly clear. I can only imagine how amazing it looks with the blue sky. I’m jealous of the other bikers who waiting to hike to Fitz Roy today. It’s is bad to wish to clouds to cover their view too?

Oh well, I can’t dwell on it. You can’t predict the weather.

I’m just hoping any minute now the clouds will open and the mountain will shout “Tah Dah!”

But the clouds are getting bigger.

I’m disappointed, but not too much. It’s just the mountains for you. They have a mind of their own. Like i just said, they’re unprefictible. Who knew That today this one would just refuse to show her glory?

Some days I, too, dont feel like coming out and shouting “Tah Dah,” so I feel like I can respect the Torre’s bashfulness…somewhat…

I’m still waiting…

And waiting…

And now the wind is picking up, and I’m getting cold.

I think I’ll take one depressing picture then head down. I have a bus to catch.
